An electrical fire Tuesday night at a Millersville townhome damaged one unit and sent neighbors into the streets after they said they saw smoke and sparks in their own homes.

Few details were available at press time but Millersville Fire Company Chief Keith Eshleman said when firefighters arrived at the scene, flames were blowing out of an electrical meter to the rear of 601 Crestgate Place in the Crossgates development off South Duke Street.

The residents of the house, who were not identified by fire officials Tuesday, were home when the 7:45 p.m. fire broke out and called 911.

A damage estimate was not available Tuesday night.

Eshleman said the residents of the home would not be able to stay in the home Tuesday night and were being assisted by the American Red Cross.

As a result of the blaze, Eshleman said it appears an electrical surge may have traveled to the other units in the 6-home block.

Residents of those homes gathered in front yards of neighboring units as workers from PPL checked electrical lines late Tuesday night.

In addition to Millersville, fire crews from Conestoga, New Danville, Lancaster Township, Rohrerstown and Goodwill Fire Company of Washington Boro responded to the blaze.
