A Lancaster County farmer trapped in a piece of farm equipment was rescued Monday evening and flown to a local hospital for treatment.

Melvin Stoltzfus was badly injured when his leg became tangled in a diesel generator, officials said.

The accident occurred just after 5 p.m. in a barn at the farmer's Grass Valley Dairy on Brick Mill Road, Sadsbury Township.

Stoltzfus, described by a neighbor as being "about 35," was airlifted to Lancaster General Hospital by a SkyFlightCare helicopter. He was listed in critical condition Monday night, according to a nursing supervisor.

"His leg was pretty bad," a neighbor said.

Christiana Assistant Fire Chief William Meadowcroft would not elaborate on the nature of the injuries other than to say Stoltzfus suffered a "lower extremity entrapment."

Firefighters from Christiana and Bart Township responded, as did LEMSA Advanced Life Support, Christiana Ambulance and the SkyFlightCare helicopter.

"We requested them because of the nature of the injuries," Meadowcroft said of SkyCare.

Meadowcroft was unsure how long Stoltzfus was caught in the equipment.

"It was an extended entrapment," he said.
