While I'm all for this notion of "the greening of Lancaster," it still smacks of BS. If there is a wide open field of green around here, you can be damn sure somebody is trying to build a shopping center or ill-constructed McMansions on it.

No, they're only green when it's fashionable. When it comes to preserving what we all ready have, they're ready to pave it over in shades of black and gray.

However, if ozone friendly paint and hybrid construction equipment are used, why then it's environmentaly more friendly than the field with trees it once was. "Green" is such a con job.

The house that I grew up in on Hand Ave. used to have a huge cistern under the front porch which used to catch the rain water from the roof. I knew of several relatives in other houses in Lancaster that had the same thing. All of them were blocked off. This is a "green" technique that used to be very common back in the day....

My guess is, it wasn't done for politcal reasons masking self-indulgence?

I think many of the old ways made a lot of sense. That was before we got affluent and wasteful post-WWII. Now we have to get back to some of the old ways, adding in newer technology. Where we live is a great example. The past 60 years of suburban sprawl has proven to be a failed experiment. The time-tested town/city with open space around it plan worked for centuries. We threw it away and are paying the price, literally and figuratively.

greening lancaster is just another way of saying we're stewards of God's creation (if that's your belief). what we do here effects interconnected places--our indulgences can cause harm to other communities. The Chesapeake Bay's condition is significantly worsened by Lancaster County; not our intention, but we've hurt the economy, environment, and livelihoods of the people there.

So look beyond the hype of green. It really means "do unto others."
