Greetings from London... Crystal Palace supporter here. We're loving your article about the mighty Eagles and having a bit of a chuckle about your description of us possessing "some of the world's best players"... hmmm, sadly deluded there chaps!
Hopefully, having already played our own US cousins from Crystal Palace Baltimore, some of you may be interested in seeing Palace play Harrisburg, so I thought I'd fill you in on a bit of detail (nothing wrong with your article, it's all factually correct, but there's loads more to know).
While we're not exactly one of England's top teams, we do have our moments (success comes along about once every ten years and sometimes lasts for as long as a couple of weeks before we shoot ourselves in the foot and end up back where we started). We've played a few seasons in the Premiership (the highest level in England, but a league many of us hate because it is so hopelessly corrupted by money) and on the occasions when we do get there we usually give a good account of ourselves before sliding back to mediocrity again. The common English perception of you Americans is that you like to be identified with success... whereas we at Crystal Palace tend to feel that glorious failure and sometimes just rank incompetence is more fun (as long as you can cope with the despair).
Although we've been in existence for more than 100 years, the Palace story is hardly one of continuous glory, more like a rollercoaster of unexpected highs and depressing lows and never knowing what's coming next. We don't boast the glamour of some of the bigger clubs, but we more than make up for it with passionate support and something of a cult reputation for eccentricity... we like to laugh at our team and everybody else's. It's often said that when Palace score the fans don't so much cheer as sigh with relief!
If you're going to the game, look out for the young right back Nathaniel Clyne (a potential superstar in the making) and two talented young forwards in Victor Moses (England under-19s star player) and Sean Scannell an Irish under-21 player. Our Argentine goalkeeper Julian Speroni is also very good. If you want to see a right carthorse who'd be better suited to pulling a covered wagon across the prairie look out for Alan Lee! Harrisburg's players might want to steer clear of Shaun Derry and Clint Hill... not the sort of blokes to meet in a dark alley.
Anyway, enjoy the game. Palace need all the support we can get, so if any of you want to come and find out loads about what we call "football" you'll find most of us talking complete rubbish at:
