An 18-year-old Willow Street man found out early Thursday that throwing an egg at a police cruiser — especially while the officer is in it — is not such a good idea.

Nor is driving over 100 mph to try to get away from the officer.

The incident began about 1 a.m. in the square of Strasburg Borough, police said.

A state policeman driving south on Route 896 was passed by a northbound car when he heard something strike the door on the driver's side of his car, police said.

He turned around and pursued the car, but the driver, later identified as Daniel Scott Barr of 343 Nolt Ave., Willow Street, sped away and refused to pull over, police said.

Barr drove above 100 mph during the pursuit, police said. He went north on Route 896 and turned onto Bachmantown Road in East Lampeter Township.

After an 1.8-mile chase, police were able to get Barr to stop his car along Bachmantown Road, police said.

Barr had four passengers in his car, including an 18-year-old who police did not name, and three minors.

Barr apologized and told police he was the one who threw an egg at the police cruiser, police said.

He said when the egg hit the police car, he "freaked out" and that's why he fled.

Police said they found a carton containing eight eggs in Barr's car.

Barr bought the carton at a Turkey Hill store and drove to a friend's house with plans to "egg" his friend's car, but he was not home, police said.

The egg that hit the police car chipped its paint, police said.

Police charged Barr with fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, propulsion of missiles, institutional vandalism, speeding and reckless driving.

The cop's bruised ego was enough to warrant the chase, endangering all the ppl on the road, I supose.

Look, the kid did a punk thing. Not cool. It was really brazen and stupid. But if anything if only the officer could have just got a description of car, got a license #...and persued him later that would 've sufficed.

There are far worse things going on.

You could look at it the other way you know? Had in the heat of the chase the kid wrecked and killed all of them in the car it would be four less punks that we'd all have to support in the future?

When standing at the pearly gates they could tell god they were stupid and egged a police car and then somehow thought they could outrun it. Just shows the poor parenting involved here!

Kids, I hope your parents are proud of you! Allthough I'm sure they are allready talking to a lawyer trying to figure out some free meal ticket for all of you?

I was thinking of other innocent people on the road who are not involved in the chase/persuit of these egg tossing hellions.

And why do we always assume the kids had such 'bad parenting'? I've known kids who had great parents who did some stupid, bad things....and down the road they changed for the better. Also, I don't know if the cop was married or not but that would be a helluva thing for his wife /loved ones to remember: him dying in the line of duty chasing down some punks who threw an egg at his cruiser.

What you say is true, but what is sad is that it would no matter what be looked at as the officer doing wrong when the kids are at fault anyway we look at it.

Its just good it ended well. No one was hurt and the kids were caught. Pretty STUPID what they did.

The article said the policeman heard something strike his vehicle. It didn't say he knew at the time it was an egg.

Really, some people are expecting a lot of the police. They have to know which dogs are mature or juvenile; which are malicious or friendly; know before pulling over the driver of a car whether he/she is a menace or just a scared teenager; know when a projectile striking their car is dangerous or just a breakfast food; etc.

I had a couple of brats throw an ice ball at my car once. It hit the rear passenger window on the driver's side and the sound it made when it hit scared me half to death. But I wasn't nearly as scared as those kids were when they saw me throw the car into "park" and get out. They ran into their house, but I got their parents. Ah, the good old days.
