A cyclist participating Sunday in the Lancaster Bicycle Club's Covered Bridge Metric Century ride was killed following a collision in East Earl Township.

Police did not release any information about the incident Monday, but bike club spokesman Ed Gower confirmed the death.

An East Earl Township police officer said the only person who could release information about the fatal accident was Chief Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy, however, could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon or evening.

Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni said the 60-year-old man died of traumatic head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Kristen Rutt.

The name of the victim was not released Monday. Gower said he did not know if the man was from the Lancaster area.

Gower said the crash happened about 9:30 a.m. at Centerville and Sensenig roads, near Terre Hill.

"The club is absolutely devastated," Gower said. "Our hearts and prayers go out to his family."

Although Gower said there is always a danger when thousands of cyclists are on the road at one time, he said serious accidents and deaths are rare.

"Sure, there are accidents but something like this … you just don't see it. It's not common," he said.

Gower said 4,100 riders participated in Sunday's Covered Bridge Metric Century ride — now in its 31st year — which winds through some of the county's rural areas and passes through six covered bridges.

Gower said riders come from all over the country to participate in the event, with proceeds benefiting the club's grant program.

Cyclists can choose a 15-, 32- or 63-mile route.

Gower said Sunday's accident happened about 27 miles into the 63-mile ride.

good question, I never even considered insurance on my bike.

I've never heard of bike insurance. Shoot, next we'll all need "walking around" insurance.

So what your saying is we have to share the road but if someone on a bike causes an accident they should not be held responsible, my insurance company should have to cover and cause my premium to go up? Everyone wants it to be fair than make it fair. I cause an accident in my car, I pay, you cause and accident on your bike, I expect you to pay.

already have walking around insurance. it's called BCBS, also life insurance picks up where BCBS leaves off. I know guys that have thier bikes insured, not for liability, but for damage incurred if they crash thier $7500.00 racer.

This debate seems to always come up and the only reason I can think it happens is many motorists don't ride bikes, but most bicyclists drive cars. Bicyclists like myself understand how many times we risk our lives riding our bikes.

Anyone complaining about bicyclists should try going for a ride twice a week for a few months. I ride almost every day and hardly ever does a ride go by where a driver hasn't done something that puts my life in danger. Rolling through stop signs, pulling out of driveways without looking, right on red without looking, not paying attention and drifting into the bike lane, turning into driveways without looking. Do I complain about every person driving a car?

Most roads in my area don't even have a bike lane. I've been hit twice, both the drivers fault not paying attention. I understand the agida you may have over a bicylist being "in your way", but believe me we cyclists ride for our lives almost on a daily basis. Every time riders who are on the side of the road being respectful of that 2,000+ pound of metal driving right next to us at 30, 40 50+ miles an hour, imagine how nervous we are sitting there with no protection, our lives completely in the driver's hands.

Do I go to a forum and start ranting about drivers whenever someone dies in a car accident, no, but some people think this is a place to lodge their complaints for whatever reason, how disrespectful. So strange, a man died and it had nothing to do with a large group of riders blocking a road, but that's what people want to write about, so sad.

Hello Zero. The right on a red light really grates me, I'm not talking about those that stop, I'm seeing more and more people run it after a quick glance. Somewhere along the way, idiots think this is legal.

Keep in mind, all of the things you bring up here apply to our children walking within boroughs to / from school, or pedestrians walking their dogs, etc. These same mistakes can become fatal even in the comfort of your car. No one is immune to inattentiveness of drivers. Stay safe.
