A cyclist participating Sunday in the Lancaster Bicycle Club's Covered Bridge Metric Century ride was killed following a collision in East Earl Township.

Police did not release any information about the incident Monday, but bike club spokesman Ed Gower confirmed the death.

An East Earl Township police officer said the only person who could release information about the fatal accident was Chief Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy, however, could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon or evening.

Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni said the 60-year-old man died of traumatic head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Kristen Rutt.

The name of the victim was not released Monday. Gower said he did not know if the man was from the Lancaster area.

Gower said the crash happened about 9:30 a.m. at Centerville and Sensenig roads, near Terre Hill.

"The club is absolutely devastated," Gower said. "Our hearts and prayers go out to his family."

Although Gower said there is always a danger when thousands of cyclists are on the road at one time, he said serious accidents and deaths are rare.

"Sure, there are accidents but something like this … you just don't see it. It's not common," he said.

Gower said 4,100 riders participated in Sunday's Covered Bridge Metric Century ride — now in its 31st year — which winds through some of the county's rural areas and passes through six covered bridges.

Gower said riders come from all over the country to participate in the event, with proceeds benefiting the club's grant program.

Cyclists can choose a 15-, 32- or 63-mile route.

Gower said Sunday's accident happened about 27 miles into the 63-mile ride.

good question, I never even considered insurance on my bike.

Just how much property damage did he do in running off the road?

I wasn't asking the question in this incident about the damage, just a question in general. I am sure if a bike hits my car the damage is not going to be extensive (most of the time) but there is still damage and I am just wandaring who is responsible. My point was there are people on here that say we have to share the road with people who ride bikes and I agree but if we have to share the roads than we have to share the responsibility.

Also, yesterday while I was sitting at a red light I watched a guy on his bike go around 5 cars that were stopped at the red light, run thru the red light and never looked for traffic coming the other way, granted it was at a little strip mall, but all the cars obeyed the law and stopped why did he have the right to go around everyone and run the light, not only did he put himself at risk by doing this but if a car would have pulled it, it could have been ugly. I know there are more responsible bikers out there than irresponsible ones, but I think if they did have to carry insurance maybe they would make the irresponsible ones act more responsible, if the were held accountable for their actions.

I've never heard of bike insurance. Shoot, next we'll all need "walking around" insurance.

So what your saying is we have to share the road but if someone on a bike causes an accident they should not be held responsible, my insurance company should have to cover and cause my premium to go up? Everyone wants it to be fair than make it fair. I cause an accident in my car, I pay, you cause and accident on your bike, I expect you to pay.

already have walking around insurance. it's called BCBS, also life insurance picks up where BCBS leaves off. I know guys that have thier bikes insured, not for liability, but for damage incurred if they crash thier $7500.00 racer.
