Shady Maple Market to grow

Shady Maple Farm Market, already the county's largest supermarket, is getting bigger.

The East Earl landmark broke ground Tuesday on an expansion and renovation costing more than $1 million.

"The whole goal is to make our store easier to shop. Right now, there are too many bottlenecks. We want customers to be able to get in and out quicker," said manager Lin Weaver.

The wide-ranging project, to be completed in six or seven months, includes moving and enhancing the seafood department, produce department and 150-seat cafe.

To make these changes possible, the 90,000-square-foot store will grow by 13,000 square feet.

The project also will add four checkout lanes to the 18 there now, enlarge the restrooms, add a carport at the store's entrance and replace the tile flooring across the entire store.

The project — the first major upgrade of the store in 18 years — will lead to two or three more jobs at the 350-employee store, said Weaver.
