State police are investigating the death of a Christiana man who collapsed at a party early Saturday in Salisbury Township.

Steve Gilmore, 23, was pronounced dead at Brandywine Hospital. He had been taken to the hospital by ambulance from the party on Old Strasburg Road after he collapsed between 4:30 and 5 a.m., state police Trooper Jerry Sauers said.

Gilmore had arrived at the party about 2 a.m. He went there after he was involved in an altercation earlier Saturday at Brass Eagle Inn, Lincoln Highway East, Gap, Sauers said.

Gilmore became unruly at the inn and was banned from entering the business, the trooper said. He tried to go back inside and got involved in a scuffle with a bouncer, the bar's owner and a patron, Sauers said.

The inn's owner was not available Tuesday for comment.

Gilmore sustained injuries, mostly scratches and scrapes, and was struck in the head during the altercation, police said.

However, Sauers said, an autopsy showed Gilmore did not suffer a traumatic brain injury that led to his death. The autopsy ruling is pending the results of drug and alcohol tests, an employee of the Chester County Coroner's Office said.

Police are continuing their investigation.

In addition they are a liability lawsuit waiting to happen. State College bouncers were implicated in a death, in Philly it happens quite frequently. I've really thought the jpb of bouncer would have faded by now due to legal problems. I mean, in this day and age it's just not cool to make such an imposition on someone as to lay your hands on them. People are resentful of being touched by strangers and persons of so called authority.

I had a similar experience myself, and I resent any kind of wrongdoing. I was in the Chameleon Club over 15 years ago, and I was the subject of two bouncers there. Getting a 2nd drink while with a coworker, I had two of them ask me to leave. As I was already walking out, I turned around to ask why I was being asked to leave. I already assumed they got the wrong patron, it was late, and I didn't make a big deal out of it other than for the fact my friend was still in there. As I turned around, one pushed me into the door frame of the entrance. As he pushed me again, I took his hand off me since I didn't do anything, and that's when he cold cocked me across the temple. Luckily, I didn't pass out and left.

A few weeks later, I seen this animal and the same idiot he was bouncing with that night at another bar they werent bouncing at, and asked again what I ever did to be booted out that night, and his buddy simply said "sh** happens, doesn't it!" and they both just smugly smiled. I learned that night that the good guys aren't always the ones at the front door of drinking establishments and I believe that night was about the last time I ever spent drinking in Lancaster City, which suits me just great. The bouncer title for some is a free ride for creating chaos instead of preventing it.

Oh my people can we all just get off our soap boxes for a moment!!! This young man was wrong for his actions, so who ultimately paid the price....HE DID... Because he became unruley I guess that gives the bouncer and owner and other patron the right to use excessive force right...WRONG... Call the police and be done with it so you know at a later time charges won't be pending for you when you used excessive force to "REMOVE" a patron... WHATEVER!!!!

hehehehehe... here's your soap box buddy

I was a bartender there for years and it's not easy when you have a drunk person and you are trying to get them out of an establishment. They don't usually go quietly and can be very angry. Drunk and angry are not a good combo. Why can't people just have a few drinks, be responsible and have a good time.

What fun would that be??? No out of control drunks = borrrrriiiinnnngggg!!!

I find it interesting that when someone doesn't know a person involved in an incident such as this, they are quick to judge and make assumptions. Some facts: Steve was a wonderful friend, son, father and human being! it doesn't matter whether he was unruly or not, no person deserves to be hit by other human beings like he was. He was my good friend for a long time, and it hurts to read people write things without knowing all of the facts. Whether or not he used drugs later that evening is irrelevant. If that is was truly caused his death (which is to be determined) so be it. Either way, the bouncers at that bar are notorious for hurting people. The job of a bouncer is not to beat up somebody for being drunk and obnoxious. Their job is to remove the individual from the bar, and call the police. If he was so "unruly" why weren't the state police called? He deserved better than that.I was not a witness, but have spoken to 3 individuals that were, and all 3 told me he was NOT being aggressive with the bouncers. and yes, they informed the police.

I ask that people have a little bit of compassion, because in the end, 2 children lost their father, parents lost their son, siblings lost their brother, friends lost a friend. Let the police do their job and find out whether or not these bouncers were within their rights. Thank you

Whether or not he used drugs later that evening is irrelevant. no it's not
If that is was truly caused his death so be it. and if so, stop slandering the bouncer
Their job is to remove the individual from the bar. which they did, & protected themselves and other patrons
I was not a witness then see your first comment

all 3 told me he was NOT being aggressive
you need to talk again to Lookingaround: "Stevie threw the first punch at the bouncer"

JWilfred
If he threw a punch, then they should have simply escorted him outside. He was a skinny guy, it should have only taken 1 or 2 people to keep him out.Why continually hit him? That's all I was trying to point out. I'm not going to sit here and argue with people about everything little thing. All I know if that my friend is dead, and he was beat up by bouncers. The latter may not have caused his death, but it sure hurt him! No bouncer is within his rights to REPEATEDLY hit somebody
