Negligence and incompetence, sloppy, and unprofessional. This employee has got to be canned ASAP!

You just *don't* leave any valuables unsecured. Any bets he'll hire an attorney? Or a PR firm.

Anyone taking employee records off the property should be prosecuted theft. There is no reason whatsoever, to have this stuff on a laptop computer. All employee records should be kept on the mainframe in an encrypted manner, read only, administration password protected. Any information thet needs to be moved from one facility to another can be moved by way of their network. It can still have the protections necessary to prevent this type of loss.
The holder of this laptop is totally negligent and irresponsible. They should be held personally responsible for any and all damages to the people who end up with any form of identy theft.
