A fire in a third-floor apartment in Columbia sent a tenant to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The 11:30 a.m. Friday fire was in an apartment above Prudhomme's Lost Cajun Kitchen, 50 Lancaster Ave., and was caused when Robert Simes III, 46, fell asleep while smoking a cigarette, said Sharon Prudhomme, who owns the building with her husband, David.

The Prudhommes, along with Mike Rider, a cook for the restaurant, "physically pulled [Simes] out" of the apartment, according to Mrs. Prudhomme. "There were no flames — just smoldering and major smoke. David, Mike and I took turns going in until we found a leg" and were able to pull the Simes to safety.

The apartment has "major smoke damage," said Sharon Prudhomme. "The carpet will need to be replaced."

Anyone with information regarding either investigation should contact the Lancaster police, 735-3300, or the Manor Township police, 299-5231.

Yep, criminals belong on the streets living happily in their residences with outstanding warrants. It's not like they were hiding.
