The Penn Square branch of Fulton Bank was robbed shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

Police said no weapon was displayed during the robbery.

Shortly after the 9:15 a.m. holdup, city police broadcast a description of the suspect. He was described as a Hispanic man, 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a stocky build and possibly weighing more than 200 pounds.

He has short hair and a well-trimmed beard and was wearing a dark shirt, red baseball hat and blue jeans.

Police dispatchers said the robber handed the clerk a note, stuck the money in his pants and walked out the Queen Street side of the bank.

The suspect, who escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, was last seen walking west across the first block of North Queen Street, police said.

Police ask anyone with information to contact them at 735-3300. Callers can remain anonymous.

That one's getting a bit old now that you've used it so many times.

Honestly, I think we're better off here than we were 15 years ago, so yes, quality of life does improve. You see people walking around downtown at night, when it used to be a complete ghost town. None of my friends are getting mugged, while I know several people where mugged 10 years ago right on their front stoop. Everything downtown is getting fixed up. Art galleries have moved in, and much to my surprise, seem to be staying.

Yes, there are still problems, but they're being worked on. If we all just throw our hands in the air and declare Lancaster a cesspool, it won't improve. (by the same token, a too-sunny view will result in the same problem)

Bottom line, I really like living in Lancaster, and much prefer it to where I used to live in the Southern End. I'll be moving to another place shortly, and I'm not even considering places to live outside the city.

i like your sense of positveness, but i wouldnt say that Lanc. is all that safe... i came home for a 3 week visit, and there were 4 murders in the city streets during that short period of time...oh and i think another one a week after i left...

move to Japan!! clean, peaceful, and people have respect for others...as of now, Lancaster IS a cesspool...just my opinion. good luck, and stay safe out there in that crazy place!

Is that why the only thing open in town after dinner time is convenience stores and bars? Only one day a month does downtown stay open past 5 oclock.

Prince Street Cafe, Carmen and David's, Senorita Burrita, Effie Ophelia, Rachel's, Cocina Mexicana, are all open well into the evening most weeknights and Saturday. None serve alcohol, and none sell candy bars.

Yup, Japan is way safe. So is Canada and most of Europe. Actually, almost any American city is substantially more dangerous than any of these other places. Tens of thousands of people are murdered every year in the USA, where hundreds, if even are murdered elsewhere. USA is #50 on the life expectancy at birth list according to the CIA world fact book. The thing is, I LIKE it here, and don't want to move. Hiding in our homes or moving away won't fix anything, and there's lots of fun and good times to be had out there.

I don't actually think this was a robbery in the classic sense. It was an exchange. The piece of paper the guy had was probably worth more than our Chinese backed dollar.

If you asked me, the guy got robbed by the bank. They probably gave him a fraction of the value of the piece of paper...

p.s. Don't forget about Yorgos. They are open late. They serve alcohol and they got baklava - better than candy
