Big Lots opened a new store Thursday in Manor Shopping Center. The 14,700-square foot store at 1262 Millersville Pike takes the place of Superpetz, a warehouse pet store that closed in April after 14 years at the site.

The discount retailer gets "big lots" of merchandise from manufacturers trying to reduce inventory, then sells it at a markdown. Items at the Manor Shopping Center store include grocery and seasonal items as well as furniture, toys and home furnishings.

Big Lots has more than 1,300 U.S. stores. This is the first one in Lancaster County. It has about 30 employees.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Columbia bakery

A new bakery, The Flour Child, opened Sept. 3 at 646 Union St. in Columbia. The small bakery specializes in cupcakes, cookies and other pastries. It serves coffee and has seating for 12. Alixe Ingoglila is the owner.

Hours: 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday; 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Yarn shop moves

Lancaster Yarn Shop, which opened last October on Prince Street, now has its store at Kitchen Kettle Village in Intercourse. The shop stocks yarn, knitting supplies and books on knitting. It also offers classes.

Lancaster Yarn Shop originally opened at 136 N. Prince St., then opened a second store in March at 3519 Old Philadelphia Pike. The Prince Street store closed in July.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with hours until 8 p.m. Thursdays.

Palace moves

Tobacco Palace opened in a new space at Park City Center last week.

The shop, which features tobacco products, had been in a kiosk in the Kohl's Wing, but has opened a 1,100-square-foot space in the JC Penney Wing.

With the move, store owner Gary Linn has added some food items to his selection of cigars, pipes and lighters.

Riding store opens

Puddle Duck Creek Tack & Apparel has been operating since May in Quarryville at 215 E. State St., Suite A. The 840-square-foot store sells new and used riding apparel and equipment, including horse blankets and hunting clothes.

Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
