Manheim Central School District stepped closer to choosing a new superintendent after narrowing the choice to two out of 10 candidates interviewed.

The district received 14 completed applications and 19 contacts for the superintendent position.

"I'm very happy. We had really quality candidates. We had quantity and quality," board member Nancy Sarley said Monday. "It was hard to narrow it down to two. I was very pleased."

The candidates are Sandra Tippett, serving as assistant superintendent in the South Middleton School District, and Norman Hatten Jr., the superintendent of Curwensville Area School District.

The district plans a meet-the-candidates night at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at the middle school, 261 White Oak Road.

Tippett said in an e-mail sent Oct. 10, "I've lived in Lancaster County for over 23 years and am very familiar with the district and the community. Manheim Central is an outstanding school district, with an excellent reputation. It has strong academic and extra-curricular programs, skilled and dedicated teachers and support staff and a supportive community that values education."

Tippett, who has held her current post for four years, previously worked in Gettysburg School District as supervisor of curriculum and instruction, elementary principal in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District and as a teacher and librarian in Elizabethtown Area School District.

Hatten has served as superintendent for the past nine years. Previously, he served as a high school principal in the Brookville School District, assistant principal in the Brockway School District and elementary teacher and reading specialist in DuBois School District.

"As I began to research the district, it quickly became evident that Manheim Central is an outstanding school district. It provides its students with strong academic opportunities and outstanding extracurricular and co-curricular programs," said Hatten in an e-mail sent Oct. 10. "I am confident the qualities I bring to the job fit very well."

Tippett said that her experience in budgeting, curriculum and research-based instruction make her a good candidate for superintendent. Her experience extends to leadership in team building and communication with staff, administration and the community.

"I believe I offer the leadership skills needed to succeed as superintendent," Tippett said. "I try to model honesty, integrity and professional behavior through my words and actions daily and will be a positive representative of the district."

Hatten said he brings passion for education to the district as well as open and positive communication with the community, faculty and board members. He has worked to build trustful and respectful relationships with everyone involved in the educational process.

"It is critical that all students are provided with the best academic, extracurricular and character-building opportunities that a quality public school education can provide," Hatten said.

The meet-the-candidates night is open to the public. Before the meeting, members of the search committee will accept questions to ask the candidates. The committee members will ask the questions.

Trustful relationships with everyone involved in the educational process. Trust me when I say it is something a lot of people are looking forward to. But how can that happen when there is an administrator still employed that thought it was OK to call me using my child's student record emergency contact information about my posts here? How can you build on something that's been destroyed and frankly, how does everyone else feel with this disregard to privacy of student records when the individual couldn't do the ethical thing by sending me, at the very least, an instant message directly to me on the forum? Would this not accomplish the right way to communicate, or was the phone call really overtly meant to be callous as what my relatives and some friends think?

Think there was no admission to any guilt through this? How about the poster that was acting as the moderator on this incident no longer posting since this happened? Coincidentally, that poster's ID isn't exactly the most cryptic one either so maybe that has something to do with it.

I'll see how long it takes for me to be able to let this go, but I highly doubt it will be anytime soon. If anyone feels their family or employee's privacy has been violated, ensure you share your information with the school board. The more information collected, the better off everyone is, and that includes employees of the school district as well.

I extend a very hardy good luck to our upcoming superintendent and the members of our school board and staff for their efforts on making the district better than the track record it had for the last few years. As for the teachers, your outstanding support of our students has been something my family has been very grateful to have. Thank you very much!

...but don't hold your breath for an apology in regards to using your private info and your postings on here as a silencer of free speech.

Terry_I. Keep an open and hopeful mind. I truly believe that the combination of new board members and new top leadership will be just what this community needs and deserves.

Hi Beth, it's been a while since I seen you here. Hope all is well.

I have had two individuals apologize and they are who I place my trust in. As for another individual, the sentiment was more "you discussed one person's position, it wasn't like you were talking about teachers as a whole." Really, that is the reasoning being employed as to why someone uses emergency contact information from school to call me because I had an opinion on a forum? That line right there told me all I needed to know about the qualities of the person I was on the phone with that day. Amazing. What if I didn't admit to my post or the wrong person was called? Did anyone think of that? Would that mean that even more student records would have been gone through?

The problem eventually becomes that of the rogue element in the district and who was pulling the strings on all of this. I've spent time talking to people on various prior related events on this as well and is a contributing factor why I'm not willing to forget this.

Needs and deserves...I couldn't agree more with both words. Our children deserve leaders to support their educational needs.

I don't recall, did you report the employee for misuse of personal information?
