(2)Police said a 75-year-old man was standing in his yard in the 100 block of Eastbrook Road at about 6 p.m. when a vehicle pulled into his driveway.
The man said he was approached by the driver, who claimed he was hired by a neighbor to construct two storage buildings and needed help finding property lines to complete landscaping.
The suspect asked the man to get his wife so he could explain the project to both of them, police said.
"He told my husband he had spoken to me earlier in the day about it, but he didn't," the 73-year-old woman said when reached by phone Wednesday. "I never saw him before."
She added that her husband saw another person, possibly a woman, in the vehicle.
The couple walked with the suspect to an alfalfa field behind their property. About 10 minutes later, the suspect and the couple walked back to the driveway side of the home. The woman said she saw the headlights of the vehicle had been turned on.
The man then told the couple he was going to get flags to mark the property lines and said he would return to the home later, police said.
When the couple returned to their home, they discovered things weren't quite as they had left them.
"My husband walked into the kitchen and said, 'What did you do with my wallet?' and I said, 'I didn't do anything with it.' We went back and forth about it," the woman said. "And then we started to notice other things."
The couple reported to police that cash, jewelry and coins were missing.
Police also said the victims confirmed with their neighbor that no one had been hired to do work for him.
Police said the suspect was driving a black Volkswagen Passat and is described as Hispanic, age 18-20, with a heavy Spanish accent. Police said he is cleancut with short hair, spiky on top and slicked down on the sides.
The suspect was well-dressed and wearing black pants, a black button-down shirt and a black coat or vest with a thick gold chain around his neck.
"We've lived here for 40 years, and we've never had any problems," the woman said. "And we live in one of the older homes. There are much bigger, newer homes across the street. I don't know why they picked us."
