(3)Sunken manhole covers and raised road edges have made an obstacle course of the state road between Millersville Borough and Manor Shopping Center.
But Steve Cotts, an inspector for the state Department of Transportation, said the roadway should be repaved by Wednesday.
"The actual completion date hasn't changed," he said. "It's always been the middle of November."
The repaving portion of the project was delayed, he said, because some gas lines running beneath the roadway had to be lowered to accommodate new drainage pipes.
After installing number laterals across the highway, workmen laid a new coat of macadam along the highway weeks ago. But manhole covers were not raised, leaving the manhole lids two to three inches below the road surface.
To avoid them, motorists swerve to the shoulder or toward the oncoming lane of traffic.Lowering the gas lines and other complications "slowed things down a bit," Cotts said. But the project's end is in sight.
Road crews working mostly at night should complete paving on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, he said, and lane closures will alternate to keep traffic moving.
"The manholes will be adjusted to the grade of the new asphalt," Cotts said. "After that, they just need to complete some pavement markings and median delineations."
The project began in late July, he said.
