CONCERT REVIEW

The venue held an air of anticipation and excitement as dozens of adoring fans stood huddled as close to the stage as they could possibly get. The lights were sheer and silky, like a thin layer of fog lingering around the stage, and although it was getting late, the crowd was as pumped up as ever.

Front and center; the beautiful and extremely talented Colbie Caillat began to serenade the audience, coaxing them warmly to sing along if they knew the words. And of course, the fans happily obliged.

Caillat, a skilled 23-year-old singer, songwriter and musician, is becoming exceedingly popular from New York to San Diego (even to Lancaster) and everywhere in between. Her peaceful, calming music appeals to young and old, and her unique style is reminiscent of singer-songwriter such as Carly Simon and even shows similarities to a personal idol of hers, Bob Marley.

Caillat's lyrics, which are all her own, communicate many positive and optimistic messages that urge not only teens, but all people to appreciate the little things — to be grateful for what they have, enjoy their lives and never give up. Having lived in California and Hawaii growing up, she is a mellow, go-with-the-flow type of artist, and this radiates through her music.

Caillat was not always as comfortable as she currently is with performing in concerts or playing in front of crowds. She admits at most of her concerts that she used to get extremely nervous and feel petrified on the stage. As a matter of fact, one of her most popular songs, "Fearless," is about her experiences with stage fright and how she overcame it and is now, well, fearless. She interacts a lot with her audiences, stopping in between songs to talk to them not as fans but as friends. Her performances allow the crowd to forget all their other problems and troubles, so they can relax and let the music take them away.

The music that Caillat presents is a wonderful combination of soulful yet light, passionate yet playful. It reaches out and touches audiences everywhere, coaxing them to live their lives happily and positively while tickling the ear with soothing melodies and beachy rhythms. Her happy-go-lucky attitude radiates through her lyrics and straight into the souls of her loyal fans, making her all the more attractive and a must-see artist.
