(2)Police believe it might have been abandoned in a farm field or a forest, possibly in Providence Township.
"With crops coming down, leaves falling off trees and hunters and hikers in the woods, we thought someone may see this abandoned out there," Quarryville police Chief Kenneth Work said. "We think it's still around."
Two four-wheelers were stolen from Tom Steinhauer's unlocked garage at 264 W. State St., Quarryville, early Oct. 4, Work said. Someone pushed them out of the garage, started them with keys that were left in them and drove away.
Neighbors heard four-wheeler motors at 3 a.m., Work said. Tracks later were found by the rail-trail line at the former Oak Bottom Road overpass. The four-wheelers also were heard going westbound on Route 372, Work said. They traveled on Fairview, Esch and Hollow roads in Providence Township, he said.
"A witness saw two four-wheelers with another vehicle," Work said. "Somebody was putting fuel in them in the area of Esch and Hollow roads."
The owner recovered one of the stolen four-wheelers the day after it was stolen, Work said. The $7,000 four-wheeler was abandoned in a farm field near Truce and Hollow roads. A custom-built 2004 Yamaha YFZ450 has not been found, Work said. It last was heard in the area of Sawmill and Pennsy roads.
The blue and silver four-wheeler is equipped for drag racing in sand, so it is longer and taller than most four-wheelers, Steinhauer said. It has several distinguishing features, including large-bubbled back tires with paddles, smooth front tires and a very loud exhaust system. "My 9-year-old son helped me build it, so it is special to me," he said. "We completed it a month before it was stolen."
Steinhauer, a 34-year-old heavy-equipment operator, said his family and friends enjoy drag-racing in sand dunes in Michigan and California a few times a year.
Police ask anyone with information about the stolen four-wheelers to call them at 786-2655.
