Utz Quality Foods has canceled plans to be acquired by Snyder's of Hanover, it was announced Wednesday.

Utz said it backed out after realizing that getting Federal Trade Commission approval would be a "protracted" process.

Snyder's and Utz had disclosed plans to combine two weeks ago.

But late last week, Utz learned that the firms' first two FTC submissions had not been cleared.

Utz decided that preparing an additional filing would be a strain and distraction.

Snyder's has 2,250 employees and $750 million in annual sales. Utz, also based in Hanover, has 2,200 employees and $400 million in annual sales.
