Richard MacHenry has worked at his New Holland car dealership for 37 years and never saw vandalism as severe as what happened over the weekend.

Vandals damaged about two dozen new and used vehicles on the Turner Buick Pontiac GMC car lot at 612 E. Main St., New Holland police reported.

Several residents of the 100 block of Orlon Street in the borough also reported damaged vehicles, police said.

No cost estimates were available from either police or the car dealership.

Vandals sprayed the vehicles with some type of caustic solution that destroyed paint and possibly some etched glass, police said.

About one of every six vehicles on dealership's lot was damaged in the spree, said MacHenry, the dealership's general manager.

"We're extremely disappointed," he said. "It's a random act of vandalism that is senseless."

Vandals did not cause major damage to the vehicles, and repairs will be relatively easy, MacHenry said. Still, they will take time and money.

"There will be some paint work and a couple tail lights," he said. "I'm not sure if there's any glass that's affected."

The damage at the car lot was discovered Monday morning, MacHenry said. He believes the vandals struck sometime Sunday night.

"It looks like they drove through and sprayed from inside their vehicle, from the passenger's side," MacHenry said. "It could have been done in one pass."

The car dealership does not have surveillance video of its lot but "wished we did," MacHenry said.

The dealership is considering offering a reward for information that would help apprehend the vandals, he said.

A few cars at the dealership were struck by eggs once about three years ago, MacHenry said, but police presence is very good in the area and generally the dealership doesn't experience any vandalism.

say...whatever happened to that "acid vandal" guy in Lancaster?

What a great and timely question: drum roll please...

He was caught in the eye of a private security camera, nearly caught, a close call that made him stop. The picture was published; it was close enough to identify his physical features.

Probably weren't too many acid victims marching in Penn Square whining about the security cameras monitoring the streets!

Drum roll right back: why would most casual vandals avoid a place like a new car dealership? Video camera security.

Was the city's acid vandal jailed? It's enough of a victory that he stopped. I understand that, but that is no comfort for those whose cars were damaged.

Funny, the first page teaser says glass WAS etched, which got my attention. This piece says maybe.
