Rescue crews helped remove a Berks County woman from the Susquehanna River Friday after she jumped from the Route 30 bridge.

The 32-year-old woman, whom police declined to identify pending notification of her family, was driving west on the Route 30 bridge between Columbia and Wrightsville when she stopped and jumped into the river about 1:45 p.m.

"She was having some mental issues this year, hard times, and she parked her 2000 silver Audi on the berm, got out, walked to the front of the car and just jumped off the bridge," said West Hempfield Township police Sgt. Russell C. Geier.

A witness told Geier she did not hesitate when she jumped.

Despite the approximately 80-foot plunge from the bridge to the water and the many rocks both above the water and just beneath the surface, the woman survived.

"She must have hit a channel, because by the time we got there, she was standing up in the water and it was only waist deep," Geier said.

The woman jumped off the north side of the bridge, but when rescuers from Columbia Fire Company got to her in a boat, she was on a rock between the Route 30 bridge and Route 462 span to the south.

"She had waded a good tenth of a mile south of where she actually went in," Geier said.

The woman was taken to Lancaster General Hospital and admitted to the Trauma Unit for overnight observation. She appeared to have no major injuries.

Geier said he does not intend to press any charges.

absolutely horrible she felt low enough she wanted to end things. but in my opinion, it was selfish to do it on a busy public road. what if a kid was in a car that was driving by and witnessed her jumping? i'm saying this because this past summer i was with a couple girlfriends of mine and we were on our way to ocean city, md. we were driving on the chesapeake bay bridge and right when we got to the highest point in the middle, the cars in front of us slammed their brakes along with a few others. my friend said she saw some woman in her early 20s (our ages) get out of her truck. next thing you know the lady in front of us got out and ran up the road, along with a few other people. we were thinking their was an accident. unfortunately she jumped off. i stayed in the car because i knew i didnt wanna look. my friends got out and looked over the rail and said she was dead because there was blood everywhere around her. i'll never forget that day and i'm not gonna lie, it did traumatize me in a way bc i have never seen or been close to a lifeless body and the fact that someone hated their life that much they wanted to end it. i just cant imagine how a child must feel having to witness that because it was june and traffic was bad enough already that i'm sure many people saw her jumping.

Im sorry what you experienced but the mindset of most suicidal ppl is not usually concerned w/'others'. They're pretty caught up in a funnel of feeling pretty hopeless. Its so sad. I hope this woman who was rescued gets the help she needs. You just don't know what she was dealing with ...Im too chicken to take my life....and too thoughtful of the ppl who have some dimension of caring about me to do so...but sometimes...I can see how one might ponder it. Esp ...look whats coming. THANKSGIVING and XMAS. If you feel like a loser, feel rejected, feel sad, broke, down and out this time of year really makes it hard.

Spaylady, Your post (and Nellie's) caught my eye right away. I have suffered from depression myself, and it is not a pretty picture. You nailed it right on the head. I too would be to chicken to do this, but you just dont ever kno what these ppl's triggers are. I am thankful that she didnt lose her life, but now I am also curious if she feels like she is a failure because she couldnt even end her life. So sad, but Im sure the thought crossed her mind. I pray that she gets the help she so desperately needs, and I hope our healthcare professional do not let her down. Great post. Happy thanksgiving to all our posters.

One thing to think about:

How much do you think her life sucks now? If she was so low in the first place, what from failing at life, only to fail at trying to die. That my friends = Epic FAIL.
