Five area teens were injured early Saturday morning in a violent one-vehicle crash in the 900 block of Schoeneck Road, West Cocalico Township.

East Cocalico Township police were sent to the scene at 3:53 a.m., where they found a heavily damaged Mitsubishi sedan overturned in a field. All five occupants had been thrown from the car, according to a witness who reported the crash to county radio dispatchers.

The vehicle hit a utility pole on the right side of the roadway and rolled several times, police said. The car then landed on its roof near a sign for Horton's Boarding Kennel.

The driver, Ethan Hartman, 19, Reinholds, was flown by Sky Flight Care to Lancaster General Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Saturday night. Hartman graduated from Cocalico High School this year, according to newspaper records.

An 18-year-old male passenger from Ephrata was flown by a Penn Star helicopter unit to Reading Hospital with traumatic injuries, police reported.

Two 16-year-old girls from Denver and a 16-year-old boy from Reinholds were also injured in the crash, police said. They were taken to Lancaster General and Reading hospitals for treatment.

A spokeswoman at Reading Hospital said a patient by the name of Austin Hartman had been admitted and was in good condition Saturday night. Austin Hartman is a running back with the Cocalico Eagles football team and played in a game against Susquehanna Township Friday night.

Police, however, released no identities other than that of Ethan Hartman. Calls to Cocalico School District officials were not returned by press time.

The car was heading north on Schoeneck Road when the crash happened, police said. The crash remains under investigation; Officer Gail Sizer said the roadway was dry at the time of the accident.

Schoeneck Fire Company was first on the scene. Lincoln Fire Company also responded, along with rescue units from Denver, Ephrata, Reamstown and Reinholds. Ephrata police assisted on the scene.n

Reading all these posts make me sick. Even the thought that some people are so self centered is ridiculous. Have any of you ever lost a sister, son, brother or daughter to an accident involving alcohol? I'm assuming not. We can sit here and point out every possible thing they did wrong and put that blame on them, but whats it going to change? Is it going to change the fact that they wrecked? Is it going to stop this type of thing from happening again? No, it wont. Kids make mistakes, Adults make mistakes.

Here's another perspective. This is a forum on news articles which has apparently been lost on alot of people here as well. What makes others sick is the fact that the action of this driver, who by the way was responsible for 4 other lives, could have hit a family coming the opposite direction. That didn't happen though, thank God, but to get on here and act like some people are horrible for these opinions while you give every excuse in the book for the actions of the driver probably makes other people sick.

I am sorry for your sister. Believe it or not, people on the opposite side of your opinion have also lost a relative or friend through shear stupidity. Drugs, alcohol, not caring enough about themselves to live a much better and smarter life. There comes a point in your life where you see enough and share your opinion. It's no longer enough to say oh well, it was just another mistake, turn the page and hope someone doesn't die. Not sure how that comes across as being self-centered.

Hope everyone has a good Thanksgiving.

My mom sat down multiple times to talk to my sister and I about the risks of drunk driving, every parent does, but kids think they are invincible. My sister has been gone 2 years because of a alcohol related accident. People were just as ignorant then as they are now. If you cant be supportive dont say anything at all. These families KNOW what their children did wrong, they KNOW that it could have been prevented, they dont need to shoving it down their throats. Love for family is neverending, YOU NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON FAMILY. Please try to understand what the families are going through, because until you experiance it, you have NO IDEA.
i continue to pray for all the families!

Alcohol + driving does not = accident. It is a stupid, thoughtless, selfish choice that impacts more than just the driver. Stop trivializing drunk driving and start calling it what it is: A criminal act that needs to be dealt with accordingly. I am sick to death of weepy BS for drunken drivers. Let's start crying for the carnage they leave behind.

And I will say whatever I want. This is a public forum. You do not dictate who gets to respond.

ITA with Reese.
I've been hit by a drunk driver. I have lost people I love to drunk or inattentive or reckless drivers. So it seems I've paid the dues and have the right. No....Wait!
I have the right as does every member of this forum to post our feelings, thoughts, ideas. No dues needed by anyone, at anytime.
I guess it's just part of the territory that new posters come here and blast the members for voicing their thoughts, beliefs and opinions. Then they disappear as fast as they came.
Just as you are free and welcome to post your comments, so are we.
Thank you for the scolding. I haven't been properly scolded in more years than I wish to reveal.
I am sorry for your loss, truly. That is something no one can understand unless they've been there.
But each member of this forum is free to share and post. No requirements as far as life experiences go, just a mind and nimble fingers. And maybe spellcheck as a bonus every now and then
And if my insisting on the right to live without you or anyone else slamming into me on the highway because of alcohol, drugs or the need for speed makes me self-centered, then hand me the slipper! This Cinderella doesn't want to die because of someone who doesn't care if they live or not.
BeachGirlFromPA
they still have said NOTHING about alcohol being involved. No article has ever mentioned the word alcohol. No police statement has used the word alcohol. Police have determined that speed was a factor. Wouldn't they also have determined by now if alcohol was involved? Its not like it takes a week to test a blood sample...

Anyone hear any updates on how these kids are doing? Hopefully everyone is recovering.
