A former Millersville University student who sparked a lockdown when he threatened to kill his classmates was given three years probation Monday in Lancaster County Court.

Joel A. Yodis, 26, of Phoenixville, pleaded no contest to a charge of terroristic threats.

No contest means he denies guilt, but admits the facts on which the charges are based.

The incident happened in March 2008, Judge Joseph Madenspacher was told, when Yodis became angry after classmates laughed at him.

Yodis threatened to kill them, using his hand to imitate firing a pistol at them, the affidavit said.

Defense attorney Alan Goldberg told the judge that Yodis was just gesturing, not intending to pretend he was holding a gun.

And the threats he made, Goldberg said, were mumblings not meant to be heard by others.

At least one student took the threats seriously and notified a professor, who, in turn, relayed the message to university administrators.

The college was placed on lockdown for two hours until Yodis was located at the school library.

He was taken to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, officials said at the time.

Yodis, who lives with his parents in Chester County, told the judge that he is continuing to receive medication and counseling from a psychiatrist.

Madenspacher ordered Yodis to continue his mental health treatment, medication and counseling as part of the conditions of probation.

I am glad that they mention that he has a mental illness. In a lot of cases they do not mention it in the paper, and it is relevant.

Absolutely it is relevant, although we are ready knew that by his actions. My daughter attends Millersville, and that was a very stressing day for me. I will give Millersville their props tho. My daughter knew immediately that their was an issue on campus thru a test message sent out by faculty at M.U. This is every parents worst nightmare, and I hope the young man gets the help he needs, even if it was court ordered. Better safe, than sorry.
