Lancaster County is ramping up efforts to provide relief to Haiti, where a massive earthquake and aftershocks have left survivors injured, homeless and starving.

The United Way of Lancaster County is asking for financial donations online at www.uwlanc.org, by phone at 866-404-5826 or by mail at United Way Worldwide, P.O. Box 630568, Baltimore, MD 21263-0568.

Besides money, the Mennonite Central Committee, based in Akron, is asking the community to supply 20,000 relief kits, 10,000 heavy comforters and 10,000 sheets for the effort.

Relief kits include personal hygiene supplies, laundry soap, towels and bandages. A complete list of kit items can be found online at mcc.org/kits.

MCC asks that the comforters be new and in twin or double size. Sheets, which also will be used as mosquito netting, should be new, light-colored cotton, at least 300-count in twin, queen or king size.

Monetary donations, which will be used to buy food or fund longterm reconstruction efforts, can be made online at mcc.org, by calling 888-563-4676 or by mail at MCC, P.O. Box 500, Akron, PA 17501.

A special fund also has been started at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, 816 Buchanan Ave., which hosts a Haitian congregation.

A spokeswoman for the church said they are collecting money, food, clothing, medical kits, flashlights and "anything else that is needed."

People can drop donations off at the church from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays. Checks should be made out to St. Peter's UCC, with "Haitian Fund" in the memo line.

Turkey Hill Minit Markets also has launched a program enabling customers to donate to the American Red Cross at cash registers in Turkey Hill stores.

Turkey Hill has pledged to match up to $10,000 in customer donations, which will be collected in the stores through Jan. 31.

The donations from Turkey Hill will provide resources to the International Response Fund of the American Red Cross.

New Holland Family Restaurant is opening from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, during which time 100 percent of the proceeds for food sold — including tips — will go to Haitian relief.

Employees will work without pay for the day so that all funds can go to the cause.
