After being found running loose as a stray, Mandarin was brought to the warmth and safety of the Humane League where she is now awaiting adoption.

Mandarin, a 3-year-old Jack Russell terrier, is initially shy but quickly warms up and loves to cuddle. She enjoys belly rubs and going for walks. Mandarin also looks forward to receiving dog treats and daintily accepts them with a wag of her tail. The only thing missing in her life is a permanent and loving home, which is something we're hoping you can provide.

Pet of the Week: Mandarin

Mandarin is available for adoption at the Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 Lincoln Highway East. Many of our available animals can also be viewed online at http://humaneleague.com/home.htm. Regular shelter hours are noon-6 p.m. Monday; noon-7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; noon-5 p.m. Friday; and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The shelter is closed Wednesday. Call the league at 393-6551.

From Jan. 26-Feb. 1, the league received 49 dogs and 53 cats. Twenty-five dogs and 29 cats were adopted; 14 stray dogs and two stray cats were reclaimed by their owners. Eight dogs were transferred to other rescue organizations. Swiss, last week's featured feline, has been adopted.

As the cold weather continues, the Humane League is reminding everyone to keep pets indoors. With such bitter cold weather, dogs and cats that typically live outdoors are more vulnerable to the elements and their typical shelter may not be sufficient. All outdoor pets should be brought into heated, protected areas. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your pet is suffering from hypothermia or frostbite.
