Lancaster Mayor Rick Gray on Monday morning ordered flags in the city to be lowered to half-staff to mark the death of philanthropist and community volunteer Caroline Steinman Nunan.

Nunan, 85, an owner of Lancaster Newspapers Inc., died Sunday in New Hampshire, after she had gone to visit her daughter in Vermont.

"Carrie's loss comes to (my wife) Gail and me as a personal loss," Gray said in a prepared statement. "She was warm and genuine and made everyone in her company feel special. For those cherished times with Carrie, we are both grateful."

Gray noted Nunan's financial contributions and the giving of her time through volunteer service to local arts organizations, historic preservation efforts and youth programs over five decades.

"Every corner of the city has benefited from Carrie Nunan's involvement in so many aspects of city life. Some people, by their personal contributions to our community, assume a larger-than-life status. They have an impact on the quality of life for generations to come. Caroline Steinman Nunan was such a person."

Gray ordered all flags at municipal facilities be lowered until her burial.

"This act is being done in mourning, but even more so in thanks that we were fortunate enough to have among us in our community a person of the quality of Carrie Steinman Nunan."
